Product Testing

Product Testing

A significant component of manufacturing is product quality testing. New machine designs are thoroughly tested in the shop, and subjected to tests of caliper and strength during every shift. Molded fiber trays are continuously tested for product weight and moisture content, and subjected every shift to tests of caliper and strength.

Pad bundle weights are closely monitored and the ground paper used in Jiffy pads is classified by particle size. In addition, a protocol is being developed to measure the pad-to-pad variability in the ability to absorb shock. “Vibration forces usually occur during transportation, are difficult to avoid, and can be repeated at 5 to 15 times each second for many hours of the trip. Vibration forces of only 25 to 100% above the normal 1 G pull of gravity can cause severe accumulated bruise damage…” Tree Fruit Postharvest Journal 4(3):6-10 October 1993
